Japanese Wedding Gown
Masquerade Best of Show Prize
at L.A.con IV

photo of knockout wedding kimono The 65th World Science Fiction Convention, Nippon 2007, presented an uchikake (Japanese wedding gown or kimono) to the winner of Best in Show.

This very special prize was shipped over from Japan by the Nippon 2007 Committee .

The majority of traditional colorful wedding kimonos ("uchikake" in Japanese) used in Japan are an orange-red color ("shuiro" in Japanese) which was historically believed to ward off evil spirits.

These beautiful garments frequently have bold designs, embroidery, and padded hems that trail on the ground for a person of the correct height. Uchikake are prized by people interested in Japanese garments, and are frequently collected as a form of artwork. Many people create large shadow boxes to hang and display these kimono.

The 65th World Science Fiction Convention, Nippon 2007, appreciates the assistance of the L.A.con IV masquerade director, Martin Jaquish in arranging for this prize to be awarded.
